The Weeknd says substance use impacted his early music: ‘Drugs were a crutch for me’
Apparently The Weeknd’s lyrics about substance use stem from his own personal experiences.
The R&B star admits he leaned heavily on drugs toward the beginning of his song-writing career — and their impact is evident in some of his earlier works.
“When I had nothing to do but make music, it was very heavy,” the 26-year-old artist told The Guardian of his drug use. “Drugs were a crutch for me.”
“There were songs on my first record that were seven minutes long, rambling — whatever thoughts I was having when I was under the influence at the time,” he continued. “I can’t see myself doing that now.”
That said, The Weeknd revealed he has turned to drugs in some capacity for some of his newer releases, too, despite referring to his usage as “dibbles and dabbles” in the interview.
