The Pelicans jumped out of the gates early with a 7-2 run to begin the game. The Cavs battled back and took the lead, but failed to close the quarter strong and saw themselves in a seven-point hole.
Kevin Love’s long bank shot kick started Cleveland’s second period, and got them back focused and engaged.
The last time the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors squared off, Kyrie Irving hit an unbelievable game-winning shot that stunned the Warriors’ faithful and sent Cavs supporters into hysterics. More
Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith will miss 12 to 14 weeks after having surgery to repair a “complex fracture” of his right thumb, the team announced Friday.
Smith suffered the injury while swiping down on Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo during the first half of Tuesday’s 114-108 overtime road victory against the Bucks.
The 13-year veteran, who signed a four-year, $57 million extension with the Cavs in the offseason, was averaging 8.6 points on 33.7 percent shooting this season — the second-worst scoring average and worst shooting percentage of his career.
Andersen hurt his right knee during practice Friday, and an MRI exam revealed the severity of the injury. The team said his recovery time will be announced following the surgery.
CHICAGO — If there ever was a time to be sure that the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ epic three-game win streak to finish the NBA Finals and beat the Golden State Warriors for the championship was a thing of a past, this week’s three-game losing streak — capped by a 111-105 defeat at the hands of the Chicago Bulls on Friday — hammered that point home.
“We’ve got to get out of the honeymoon stage,” a visibly frustrated LeBron James said after he had a personal 30-game winning streak broken for his teams when he totaled 20-plus points and 10-plus assists. “That’s y’alls headline for tomorrow. I know y’all going to use it.”
James finished with 27 points and 13 assists, but he also had a season-high eight turnovers — giving him 20 turnovers during the three losses.
While he had a part in the Cavs’ undoing, it was Chicago’s 78 points in the paint that really stood out for the reason for the demise. This after Cleveland was outscored 68-34 in the first loss of the streak against the Milwaukee Bucks and 30-18 in the second loss against the Los Angeles Clippers.
“You’ve got to play the game the right way,” James continued. “You’ve got to battle every night like we ain’t won nothing. Last year is last year and after ring night, it’s over with. Now it’s a new season and everybody is gunning for us every night and we have to understand that. The honeymoon stage is over and it’s time to play some real ball and be physical, especially in the trenches. Giving up 78 points is ridiculous. We’ve got to man up. Everybody.”
It’s the first three-game losing streak of Tyronn Lue’s tenure as head coach after being elevated to the position at midseason last year.
A 113-94 beatdown of the defending champion Cavaliers was certainly one way for the Los Angeles Clippers to bounce back from a double-overtime loss to the lowly Brooklyn Nets. And in the same way that defeat exposed the Clippers at their very worst, Thursday night’s win in Cleveland showed this team at its very best — a real threat to a seemingly inevitable Warriors-Cavs Finals rematch.
The blowout win wasn’t always pretty, unfortunately. If you tuned in for tip-off, you know the first quarter brought with it a cacophony of whistles from the officials. For that, we can largely blame Blake Griffin, who’s playing the very best basketball of his life.
Over a sixty-second stretch in the opening frame, Griffin drew three fouls against the Cavs, earning two trips to the free-throw line. That’s kind of been his thing this season, with the Clippers forward averaging the second-most FTAs per 36 minutes in his career. For good measure, Griffin is making a career-best 77.4 percent of his free throws.
The better he gets, the more he’s forcing opponents to choose between practically tackling him on his way to the rim or giving up a demoralizing dunk. Want to hang back and dare him to make plays for others? No problem; Griffin is an outstanding (yet underrated) passer, as he demonstrated against Cleveland with 11 assists to go along with 13 points and five rebounds.
Maybe pump the brakes on those 3-pointers, though, Blake. Griffin’s taking one 3 per game but making just 22 percent of them. Meanwhile, J.J. Redick continues to get buckets from deep, knocking down 4-of-6 triples for 23 points in Thursday’s win, bringing his season average to over 45 percent…
CLEVELAND (AP) Upon arriving at Quicken Loans Arena, the Cavaliers received commemorative watches, the latest gifts to celebrate their NBA championship.
J.J. Redick scored 23 points, Blake Griffin matched a career high with 11 assists and the Clippers bounced back from a brutal loss with a 113-94 victory on Thursday night over the Cavs, who have lost two straight for the first time since winning their title.
Afterward, there was no panic inside Cleveland’s locker room, but rather a measured response to the first real adversity this season. The Cavs also lost in Milwaukee on Tuesday, but LeBron James isn’t worried – yet.
”Two pretty poor games for sure,” said James, who scored 16 but had five turnovers. ”You’re hoping they’re not back-to-back, but it happens. Now, three games in a row? That’s something to talk about. We need to figure it out. It’s different from football where you have to wait a whole week to redeem yourself.
”We get right back at it tomorrow night so we’ll be all right.”
Chris Paul shook off some early foul trouble and scored 16 and DeAndre Jordan had 15 rebounds for the Clippers, who came in hungry after blowing an 18-point lead and falling in double overtime at Brooklyn on Tuesday.
”It’s who we are, I really believe that,” said Clippers coach Doc Rivers. ”We actually played to our potential. We had some adversity, which is great. Chris got in foul trouble and we extend the lead. It was a team win.”
Los Angeles took control with a 13-2 run to open the third quarter.
Kyrie Irving scored 28 and Kevin Love 16 for the Cavs, who were outplayed for the second game in a row. During Tuesday’s loss, coach Tyronn Lue pulled his starters in the second half and J.R. Smith wandered off the floor during play and gave…
MILWAUKEE – Following a blowout loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday in a game in which J.R. Smith allowed a wide-open dunk because he was busy greeting a Bucks player on the sidelines while the ball was in play, the Cleveland Cavaliers guard pleaded ignorance when asked about the mistake.
“I wasn’t even paying attention,” Smith said of his hug with Jason Terry with 2:57 remaining in the second quarter that left Tony Snell with an uncontested path to the basket. “I don’t even remember that.”
The basket gave Milwaukee a 53-50 lead en route to its eventual 118-101 victory, snapping a four-game win streak for the now 13-3 Cavs.
The blunder certainly wasn’t the main reason Cleveland lost – it can blame its season-high 20 turnovers leading to 22 Milwaukee points and the 68 points in the paint it gave up for that – yet Smith maintained his charade of selective amnesia nonetheless.
“What play are you talking about?” Smith said when a reporter continued to ask him about the clip that had already gone viral before the game even ended.
When the reporter described the play in detail, Smith replied, “I didn’t even know I was in the game. My bad.”
During the interview Smith wore a ski mask style cover over his face, only making his answers more bizarre.
“It’s my alter ego,” Smith said. “It’s a gift from Ohio State, so I figure why not?”
Smith got the hood he during the Cavs’ trip to the Ohio State-Michigan football game over the weekend.
He was then asked if his alter ego had a name.
“Yeah,” he said.
What is it?
“I can’t tell you,” Smith said as LeBron James chuckled as he got dressed at the locker next to him, causing Smith to laugh as well.
Cavs coach Tyronn Lue was in a far less cheery mood after what was, unmistakably, his team’s worst loss of the season.
“I just didn’t like that we didn’t match their physicality,” Lue said after Cleveland saw an early 14-point lead turn into a double-digit defeat. “I…
BOSTON (AP) Kawhi Leonard had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Patty Mills scored 19 to lead the San Antonio Spurs past Boston 109-103 Friday for their eighth straight victory. Mills made a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left after the Celtics made it a one-possession game.
David Lee had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and rookie Davis Bertans scored a career-high 15 to help the Spurs improve to 9-0 on the road this season. San Antonio beat Boston for the 10th straight time.
Isaiah Thomas scored 24 points with eight assists and Avery Bradley had 19 points and eight rebounds for Boston, which had won three in a row. Al Horford had 12 points and 10 rebounds in his second home game since signing a four-year, $113-million contract with Boston this summer. Jae Crowder added 18 points for Boston.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Kevin Love scored 27 points, Kyrie Irving added 25 and Cleveland led by as many as 45 points in a rout of Dallas.
Love hit seven 3-pointers while Irving, who made his first 10 shots, scored 19 points in the first quarter. Irving’s big quarter came two nights after Love scored an NBA-record 34 in the first against Portland.
LeBron James, playing in his 1,000th regular-season game, had 19 points and 11 assists.
The defending NBA champions faced little resistance from the team with the league’s worst record. Dallas scored the game’s first basket before the Cavaliers turned the game into a rout. Cleveland led 36-16 after one quarter and was ahead 68-28 late in the second.
Dirk Nowitzki, who appeared in only his fifth game of the season because of an injured right Achilles, scored 15 points for Dallas.
NEW YORK (AP) – Carmelo Anthony scored a season-high 35 points, including the tiebreaking jumper with 3.1 seconds left in overtime, and New York beat Charlotte.
Derrick Rose added 16 points and blocked Kemba Walker’s 3-pointer that would have won it just before the buzzer. Kristaps Porzingis also scored 16 points in the Knicks’ sixth straight home victory.
Former Hornets guard Courtney Lee finished with 12 points in the opener of a home-and-home series.
Marco Belinelli scored 19 points, Nicolas Batum had 18 and Walker added 17 for the Hornets, who have lost four straight games.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) – Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 16 points and a career-high 10 assists as Detroit beat Los Angeles.
Detroit won its second straight and improved to 7-2 at home, as opposed to 1-7 on the road. The Clippers lost for just the second time in 13 games, falling to 7-1 on the road.
Marcus Morris scored 17 points and Andre Drummond had 16 points and 10 rebounds, as the Pistons got at least 15 points from all five starters. Jon Leuer added 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
J.J. Redick and Blake Griffith each had 24 points for the Clippers, while Chris Paul had eight points to go with 15 assists.
