There was a lot of talk about Gutekunst would represent a change in philosophy from the days of Ted Thompson. Actions speak louder than words and boy did Gutekunst go into action during the NFL’s legal tampering period. First came word that the Packers are dealing Damarious Randall to Cleveland. Then, after free agent after free agent kept falling off the board (and Green Bay fans were wearing out their cuticles wondering just what in the heck the Packers were going to do), it was reported that tight end Jimmy Graham was headed to Green Bay. And defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson announced on Twitter he was going to be a Packer. All was right in Green Bay and fans were drooling over landing two big names … but the Packers also released longtime wide receiver and fan favorite Jordy Nelson. That one stung and took some of the luster out of the moves. How all of this pans out will be judged in the future (will those free-agent pickups have an impact of a Charles Woodson or Martellus Bennett, or somewhere in between?) and surely some fans are excited over the moves and think Gutekunst is trending up while others are disappointed over Nelson and have him trending down. We’ll play it in the middle: Nice pickups, but Jordy, man. Jordy.
