John Cena And 5 Quotes From His SmackDown Return Promo That Suggest A Heel-Turn

John Cena returned to WWE SmackDown Live Tuesday night, but there was something oddly dark and slightly mean-spirited about his return promo. What was supposed to be a feel-good message (“I’m not leaving!”) turned into somewhat of a tirade that ranged from fiery to outright bitter.

Said Jason Powell of Prowrestling.net on Cena’s promo: “I’ve given up on a full fledged heel turn and I’d much rather see Roman Reigns turn heel before Cena, but I could see Cena developing a bit of a heelish edge heading into a program with Undertaker.”

Cena’s run of being a top babyface with not even a sliver of a heel run rivals only that of Ricky “the Dragon” Steamboat, who essentially spent his entire career as a good guy. Cena’s similar tenure over the past 11 years has caused tiresome demands of a heel-turn to give his character a hard restart and a potentially compelling victory lap.
