Cumberbatch to Play Doctor Strange (UPDATED)

Doctor Strange
It seems that the Disney-owned Marvel Comics‘ all-powerful film division has finally cast the lead in what’s bound to be one their more bizarre cinematic outings to date, Doctor Strange

(Updated (12/6/14): Since initially posting this, it was then announced that Cumberbatch’s casting was not quite confirmed. BUT, as of today it is official which you can read about here.)

The man now attached to play the mystical surgeon — after much in the way of rumor and speculation — is TV’s Sherlock, and cinema’s most recent Kahn, Benedict Cumberbatch

The news comes a day before a planned Marvel Studios’ event in L.A., at which big announcements about their upcoming slate of flicks are expected.

Co-created by Stan Lee and the legendary and enigmatic comic artist oddball, Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange is noted for being one of Marvel‘s most peculiar titles.

The film will be directed by Scott Derrickson, the man behind such flicks as The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister; the latter of which, in particular, makes him an interesting choice for this project. Jon Spaihts, who co-wrote Prometheus, is writing the screenplay.

A tentative release date of 2016 is being bandied about, but no official announcements have been made as of this writing.

Deadline broke this story, and you can read what they had to say here.
