Best known for her 1937 novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, the prolific Hurston — the daughter of two former slaves — led a frequently turbulent, and unjustly troubled life. Her work went all but forgotten for decades, but an eventual and substantial critical reevaluation restored her legacy.
