John Legend and actress-singer Cynthia Erivo performed a poignant rendition of the Beach Boys‘ “God Only Knows” to honor the artists who died over the last year.
Legend outlined the melody of the 1960s pop standard with spare piano playing. After he delivered a verse and Erivo added her contribution, they paused their performance as the screen showed the faces of the deceased – a group that includes Prince, George Michael, Sharon Jones, Leonard Cohen, Juan Gabriel, Phife Dawg and many more.
