See André 3000 as Jimi Hendrix
All Is By My Side was written and directed by 12 Years A Slave screenwriter John Ridley, and marks the first time that the late Hendrix’s life story has been dramatized for the big screen, after decades of attempts. Made without the support of the Hendrix estate, the film suffers from the potentially massive liability of not being allowed to include any of the guitar giant’s own compositions.
The trailer, which we’ve included below, does feature a great-deal-better-than-serviceable approximation of Hendrix from Benjamin (who is, it should be noted, a full decade older than Hendrix was when he died), suggesting that — to the degree that a movie trailer can suggest anything — perhaps the project isn’t entirely worthless. We remain skeptical, however.
