NFL free agency 2017: Brandon Marshall deal, latest Giants rumors, buzz on Wednesday | RECAP

Tuesday was the first day of the NFL‘s “legal tampering period.” The period allows teams to enter negotiations with the agents of unrestricted free agents before contracts can be finalized after 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Not surprisingly, the Giants were quiet on Tuesday. With just $13 million in salary cap space, the Giants aren’t in position to make a big splash in free agency.

Business could pick up a bit on Wednesday for the Giants, especially as they try to come to an agreement on a long-term deal with Jason Pierre-Paul, who was franchise tagged last week.

This post will be updated throughout the day with the latest buzz, news and rumors, with live Twitter updates available in the feed below.

THE LATEST:

JPP market watch:

When Chandler Jones deal is signed, he’ll make over $16M/season, ($83-$84M for 5 years) w/over $50M guar. Monster deal

Jason Pierre-Paul’s camp was surely paying attention to the deal signed by Cardinals edge rusher Chandler Jones. Jones will reportedly get a deal in Olivier Vernon territory: Five years for $83-84 million with over $50 million guaranteed. Pierre-Paul is only one year older than the 27-year-old Jones.

Another DT option:

Ravens also won’t be getting Brandon Williams back. Lot of rumblings about Williams and Giants but not sure a decision has been made.

This came out of left field. The Giants are interested in retaining defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, but his price may be too high. Williams is expected to be even more expensive and he is more of a Damon Harrison clone as a run-stuffing defensive tackle. The Giants can get creative to create more cap space, but it’s hard to see them finding enough to land Williams.

Targeting another weapon:

Few TEs left. GB wants to keep Cook. Hear NYG, JAX, BUFF and NE are in on Bennett. TEN and DET have been inquiring on TEs as well

— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 8, 2017

The Giants reportedly are pursuing tight end Martellus Bennett, who was with the team during the 2012 season. It would seem difficult for the Giants to afford Bennett, but the team is exploring all avenues to upgrade the offensive weapons.
