NBC Cancels ‘Community’
The dense, arch, surreal, deeply satirical, and multi-layered program, deconstructed and mocked television and film tropes, while also simultaneously and miraculously portraying characters the audience could care about. It was, in many ways, one of the more adventurous and legitimately creative programs ever broadcast on network TV. While not necessarily as brilliant as its worshipful cult might have had it, and definitely a bit too clever by half at times, it was always admirable.
In these days of secondary and tertiary outlets for episodic television, few believe that we’ve seen the last of a property with such a devoted audience. We expect new episodes will be produced for Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon before too long. But for now, the often troubled, and always seemingly about-to-be-canceled show is technically no more; after five seasons, a frankly much longer run than anyone might have expected.
