It seems that today’s top Olympics story — in the states, at least — does not involve athletes, but broadcasters.

NBC Sports’ veteran announcer, Bob Costas (PeekYou profile here), apparently awoke on Tuesday in Sochi, Russia with both of his eyes crusted and swollen shut. In this condition, it became apparent to him that he could not do Tuesday’s Olympic broadcast. Today show host, Matt Lauer (PeekYou profile here), already in Russia for his own broadcasts, was tapped to fill in.

Costas has described his condition as “pinkeye or conjunctivitis,” and said he intends to spend some time in a darkened room, taking antibiotics and applying cold compresses.
