Marty McFly Sneakers are Coming

Back to the Future
Only a few months after it was revealed that the general public would soon be able to purchase a hoverboard much like that featured in the 1989 film, Back to the Future II, Nike has announced that by 2015 we’ll also be able to purchase the self-lacing sneakers that same movie predicted.

In 2011, Nike produced and auctioned off 1,500 pairs of sneakers that were replicas of those worn by Marty McFly, as portrayed by Michael J. Fox (PeekYou profile here), in the movie; the proceeds going to Fox’s Michael J. Fox Foundation, which is dedicated to fighting Parkinson’s, a disease with which Fox is afflicted.

While the auctioned off shoes looked just like those in the film, they lacked one crucial element; an ability to lace themselves up with the push of a button. Nike designer Tinker Hatfield has let slip — as you can read about here — that by 2015, the year portrayed in the flick, sneakers with that “power lacing” ability will actually be available.

Here’s to the future being the present.
