Keep Up With Pussy Riot on PeekYou

Pussy Riot
Pussy Riot — the Russian punk rock group who made headlines around world when they were imprisoned in 2012, and who have continued their anti-Putin activism unabated since their release from prison this past December — were attacked by Cossack militia members with whips and teargas in the Winter Olympics host city of Sochi, Russia on Wednesday.

The group — including Nadezhda Tolokonnikova (PeekYou profile here) and Maria Alekhina, who were both released from jail in December, and who did a press tour of the states just last month — say they have been detained on a number of occasions since arriving in Sochi this past Sunday.

The incident we mention above occurred while the group was attempting to film a performance of a song apparently titled Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland.

NBC New York writes of the story here.

For clarity, Cossacks are a volunteer citizen patrol, and ardent devotees to the Russian Orthodox Church; with a history that leads all the way back to Russia’s czarist-era.

PeekYou doesn’t generally even weigh in on matters of American politics, so we will also not officially weigh in on this. But this is a major focal point of Internet attention, these days, and a visit to Nadezhda (Nadya) Tolokonnikova’s PeekYou profile will provide ample opportunity to read up on this story, and all things related to Pussy Riot.
