Internet Opinion is Mixed on Avril Lavigne’s ‘Hello Kitty’ Video (but Not Really)

Hello Kitty
“Mixed” would be a generous assessment of online opinion regarding Avril Lavigne’s (PeekYou profile here) newest video, for her single “Hello Kitty.”

Personally, given the hubbub, we are not quite sure how the video is that much worse than a lot of other culturally pandering and/or insensitive, mindless, and patently insincere pop product we see floating about. The notion of this video being particularly egregious has gone viral, however (here’s an essay deconstructing the whole thing), and who are we to fight it?

We suppose we do concur that the nearly 30-year old Lavigne could be a little more dignified.

It’s colorful, the Japanese audience to which it’s pandering apparently has received it with some enthusiasm, and we’ve never been holding out high hopes for the newest offering from Avril (particularly not those co-written by her husband, Chad Kroeger of Nickelback). Alas, the Internet is dwelling and mocking, so we will acknowledge it. Whatever slings and arrows she suffers, Avril will most likely continue crying all the way to the bank.

Don’t get us wrong, this video is terrible. I suppose we’re just not sure that we care. But you good people do, and we care deeply about you. So, here you go; watch the video below, and then peruse the tiny Ms. Lavigne’s gargantuan digital footprint — comprised of social pages, home pages, videos, photos, articles, interviews, and much more — via the hundreds and hundreds of links to be found on her PeekYou profile.

UPDATE: Avril’s people evidently do not want this video embedded anywhere, for whatever reason, and have removed it from all sites that would permit folks to do so. So, you can view it by visiting Avril’s site directly here.
