Hulu in Talks to Resurrect ‘Community’

Earlier in May, NBC announced that after five troubled seasons, they had finally pulled the plug on the cult sitcom Community.

Word on the Web today, however, is that it seems the scrappy little show with the feverishly devoted fanbase may get its sixth season after-all; courtesy of streaming TV service, Hulu.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there have been talks between Hulu and Sony Pictures Television, who owns the program. No deal is on the table yet, however.

Series creator and showrunner (for all but the largely dismissed fourth season), Dan Harmon (PeekYou profile here), blogged in the wake of the NBC cancellation that while not opposed to a non-NBC continuation of the show’s production, he wasn’t entirely optimistic regarding its likelihood.

Here’s a passage directly from that entry:

I will confess, however, that when Sony called me on Friday with the news, there was brief discussion at the end of the call about the concept of the show living elsewhere, and I was definitely in the “eh” column. For a million reasons, some selfish, some creative, one logistic, five sexual, three racist (in a good way) and, oddly, nine isometric. I won’t bore you with them. I mean, of course I will bore you with them. Boring you is my job, my hobby and my passion. But it doesn’t matter right now WHY I’d be lukewarm or if my reasons would be valid, what matters is, I won’t be lukewarm. I’ll heat up. I said “eh” on a Friday afternoon, I will change it to a “sure, let’s talk” on Monday morning and Sony can do their thing. I’m not going to be the guy that recancels cancelled Community. But time has passed since then, so who’s to say? We’re blogging of it because it’s trending, but do acknowledge that this story may be a non-starter.

As we wrote in here of Community previously; “The dense, arch, surreal, deeply satirical, and multi-layered program, deconstructed and mocked television and film tropes, while also simultaneously and miraculously portraying characters the audience could care about. It was, in many ways, one of the more adventurous and legitimately creative programs ever broadcast on network TV. While not necessarily as brilliant as its worshipful cult might have had it, and definitely a bit too clever by half at times, it was always admirable.”

And wasn’t that a mouthful?

Now, we tie this in what we do: The cast of the program — well, most of them at least, plus the show’s mastermind, the above-mentioned Mr. Harmon — sorted out by their PeekScores; measuring the varying degrees to which they’re each prominent, active, and making an impact in cyberspace.
