On October 18, Chuck Berry — an American of nearly incalculable importance to the last 60 years of western culture — turns 87 years old.

Banks won’t be closed, and the mail will still arrive, as should probably be the case (after all, the guy’s still alive), but federal holiday or no, whether you realize it or not, your day will be a bit livelier than it would have otherwise been had Chuck Berry not been born. There’s almost certainly something you love which either would not be, or would at least not be nearly so cool, had this guy never lived.
