Boston (AFP) – Kawhi Leonard scored nine points in the final 7:17 as the San Antonio Spurs kept rolling with a spirited 109-103 win over the Boston Celtics that extended three winning streaks.
LaMarcus Aldridge clinched the Spurs come-from-behind victory with an offensive rebound and two free throws with 17 seconds remaining.
“It was a great win for us against the really active team,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
The Spurs, who trailed by 14 points in the first half, improved to 13-3 on the season in front of a crowd of 18,600 Friday at the Boston Garden arena.
San Antonio rallied for their eighth straight NBA win, their ninth in as many games on the road this season, and also beat Boston for the 10th straight time.
Leonard, who finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, scored nine points in the fourth quarter.
Former Celtic Patty Mills tallied a season-best 19 points and rookie Davis Bertans and veteran David Lee added 15 points apiece.
The UFC 206 main event took a major hit on Friday, as an undisclosed injury has forced Daniel Cormier out of his light heavyweight title defense.
Cormier was supposed to put his belt on the line in a rematch with Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. The initial news came from an MMAFighting.com report that Cormier suffered an injury and had to withdraw.
Johnson confirmed the fight was canceled via his Instagram account, and tweeted to the champion, “I wish nothing but the best for DC and I hope you have a full recovery champ.”
The Dayton Flyers got back on the winning track, avoiding their first three-game losing streak since January 2014, with an 84-74 victory over Portland in the consolation bracket of the Wooden Legacy on Friday at…
CLEVELAND, Ohio — At virtually any moment during the third quarter, if not the second, one could easily envision Dallas coach Rick Carlisle frantically searching under the bench chairs muttering “there’s got to be a white towel around here somewhere.”
Had he found it, he’d have thrown it in the Cavs’ general direction.
The defending NBA champs and the league’s worst team played their respective roles to a T in Cleveland’s 128-90 trouncing of the Mavericks Friday night at The Q.
This was the Cavs’ largest margin of victory this season. They drained 20 3-pointers to Dallas’ eight. You do the math.
Staying hot from his 40-point outburst Wednesday, Kevin Love again led the Cavs with 27 points and added 10 rebounds. Kyrie Irving scored 19 of his 25 points in the first quarter. James chipped in 19 points and 11 assists.
All of this, mind you, was in three quarters of work. Cavs coach Tyronn Lue pulled four of his five starters with 1:48 left in the third and Cleveland ahead by 42. It was 72-38 at halftime so, yeah, a running clock in the second half would’ve been fine for Carlisle.
The Mavericks are now 2-13 and have lost eight straight. They have lots of players you’ve heard of, names like Dirk Nowitzki (15 points), Deron Williams (four…
A highly anticipated matchup between in-state rivals Washington and Washington State was far less competitive than expected. The Huskies bludgeoned the Cougars on their home turf, racking up 512 total yards and six touchdowns in a 45–17 rout. The win clinches the Pac-12 North Division for Washington, and it will face either USC or Colorado in the conference title game next week. Here are three thoughts on what unfolded at Martin Stadium:
1. Washington got off to a great start
Washington wasted little time in demonstrating why it is considered one of the best teams in the country. The Huskies scored touchdowns on their first four drives, including consecutive passing scores from quarterback Jake Browning to wide receiver Dante Pettis, and limited the Cougars to only three points over their first five sequences. Browning picked apart Washington State’s pass defense, and the Huskies shut down star quarterback Luke Falk and the Cougars’ high-octane attack. Through the first quarter, Washington was averaging 11.4 yards per play compared to 4.9 for Washington State, and the Huskies had recorded nine first downs compared to two for the Cougars.
Washington State finally got into the end zone in the second quarter when it took advantage of good field position after forcing a fumble from Washington receiver John Ross, but the Huskies responded with a seven-play, 85-yard touchdown drive to extend its lead to 25 points. The Cougars’ nightmare half came to a close with them squandering another scoring opportunity, as Falk lofted a pass into heavy coverage in the end zone for an interception. It goes without saying this was not the way Washington State envisioned the first two quarters of this game unfolding, but unlike most situations, when the high-scoring Cougars could feel confident in their ability to make up sizable deficits, the vast disparity in performance between these two teams over the first two quarters left the impression that Washington had already secured the…
Johansen, Wilson Each Net a Pair, Preds Finish Off Perfect Home Stand
Ryan Johansen and Colin Wilson combine for five points, and the Nashville Predators complete a perfect home stand with a 5-1 trouncing of the Winnipeg Jets.
Wilson, Johansen Score Two Each, Nashville Now 8-1-1 at Home
Thanksgiving week turned out just fine for the Nashville Predators.
Behind two goals from both Colin Wilson and Ryan Johansen, the Preds defeated the Winnipeg Jets by a 5-1 final on Friday evening to complete a perfect 3-0-0 home stand. The victory gives the Preds points in eight-straight games at home and a 10-7-3 record overall as things continue to come together in the right way for the club.
“I think even early in the season we had some games that were good too, and we just couldn’t score – especially at 5-on-5,” defenseman Roman Josi said. “I think today we got a couple bounces and one or two goals; they kind of bounced for us. We played a really good game, really sold it. [Pekka Rinne] was great again, like he has been all month.”
Nashville, TN – Matt Carle and the Nashville Predators announced Friday that the defenseman is retiring from the National Hockey League after a successful, 12-season career.
“It has been an honor to be a player in the National Hockey League and play for four great organizations over the past 12 seasons,” Carle said. “At this time, I have decided to retire as a National Hockey League player. I want to thank the San Jose Sharks, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning and the Nashville Predators for the opportunity to play for each organization. I would also like to thank all the fans that I have met throughout my career for the support that you have given me. Most importantly, I want to thank my family for all the sacrifices they have made on behalf of my career. My Parents, brothers, and wife Clancey allowed me to focus on the pursuit of playing the best sport in the world, in the best League in the world and I will always be grateful.”
Bitetto, Saros Return to Preds Morning Skate, Nashville Looks for Sixth Straight at Home
Defenseman Anthony Bitetto, forward Miikka Salomaki (Injured Reserve) and goaltender Juuse Saros returned to the Nashville Predators morning skate on Friday. The Predators are seeking a sixth consecutive victory at Bridgestone Arena tonight.
For the visitors, however, the road has been unkind. The Jets are losers of four straight away from home and will try to right the ship in part one of the teams’ home-and-home series (tonight at 5 p.m. CT). The Preds and Jets will meet again on Sunday at noon at MTS Centre.
UNIVERSITY PARK –– The last seven games for No. 7 Penn State have put the team in position to make a Big Ten championship run. Perhaps even a shot at the College Football Playoff.
If the Nittany Lions (9-2, 7-1) win their eighth consecutive game, against Michigan State (3-8, 1-7) on Saturday at Beaver Stadium, they will play a week later in the conference championship in Indianapolis, if No. 2 Ohio State beats No. 3 Michigan.
The Lions need help from the Buckeyes, but as coach James Franklin said, none of that matters if they don’t win their own game. Their fate against the Spartans is the only one they can control.
“We just got to go out and play well on Saturday and focus on Michigan State,” Franklin said. “After the game is over, then we’ll find out kind of what your next step in our journey is.”
LOS ANGELES — The last time the Golden State Warriors visited Staples Center they suffered a surprising 20-point thumping by the Los Angeles Lakers. Since then, the Warriors have reeled off nine wins in a row.
The Warriors and the Lakers meet Friday for the second time in three days and the third time this month.
On Wednesday, the Warriors (13-2) delivered some payback in a 149-106 rout at Oracle Arena of the short-handed Lakers, who played without starting point guard D’Angelo Russell — out two weeks with a sore left knee — and forward Julius Randle (hip pointer). It was the most points scored by an NBA team this season.
“I don’t think a team I’ve been on has ever scored 150 points in a game,” said Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson, according to the East Bay Times. “But I can settle for 149.”
Stephen Curry (31), Kevin Durant (28) and Thompson (26) combined for 85 points. The Warriors, who recorded a franchise-record 47 assists, scored 80 points in the first half.
“It was a beautiful exhibition that (the Warriors) put on,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. “As painful as this one was, that’s the beauty of the NBA. You always have another chance to redeem…
Both teams are coming in hot — Dallas winners of nine straight, with only a one-point season-opening loss, and Washington 6-1-1 since an 0-2 start. The teams met in Week 2 and the Redskins had Dallas on the ropes before an end-zone interception thrown by Cousins; Prescott then led his first game-winning drive.
The teams are different now, better maybe. All that hype is a lot to take in. Makes you wonder when you’ll even have time to serve Thanksgiving dinner. (We asked folks when they were eating, here.)
Here’s everything you need to know to get you prepped for this one:
