In an effort to initiate a fresh-start between the Obama administration and the Church, where relations had previously been somewhat strained, the two side-stepped the thornier matters of contraception and abortion in their discussions, instead focusing on their common-ground; such as, according to a White House statement, their “shared commitment to fighting poverty and growing inequality.”
